If you watch Netflix, Java is the backend that makes it possible to stream content to more than 300 million viewers worldwide. Use a credit card or some mobile payment process, and it’s likely Java is running on the card or mobile device as you make your purchase. In fact, around 6 BILLION Javacards are shipped out every single year! If you use an android phone or android device, then likely as not Java (or at least the JVM) is in there too as the main app language (in addition to running on the actual SIM card, which is present in pretty much ALL smartphones). It is the dominant environment in large enterprises and in many medium and small sized businesses, which depend on this language to just get the job done.

I first learned Java in 1995 or 1996, when the language was introduced as the hot new tool for the coming internet, and in the decades since then I have used it as my primary (and pretty much only) programming tool at work and at play. I can honestly say that it is a major part of my life, and that I would not be the person I am today without it.

My hope is that it will remain a major part of my life going forward as well, because Java has given me so much joy and happiness, and made life interesting. And in the end that’s all that really matters isn’t it?

This is not an article about grasses.
