A short intro to the author

Welcome to a list of some of the sites that I have scattered into the web since the mid-1990s. My name is Airlan San Juan, and it all started when I was a rebellious pre-med student who just wanted to be a biologist.

After I veered off my initial path, I was awarded a Masters in Plant Molecular Biology, then later collected an MBA with a specialization in Information Systems. I became a crusading Java programmer when this programming language first emerged in 1996, and I am a veteran of the early days of Java's evolution from quirky applets to heavy server side applications. Java remains an enduring passion for me, with my current interest being in the realm of Java Cards and secure elements.

My other (and perhaps deeper) love is nature and biology. I have a very strong bias towards arthropods and plants, as opposed to vertebrates and other soft squishy things, and the websites below reflect my lifelong interest in the natural sciences. They span from the mid-1990s (thus, the really bad HTML and styles) to the present. My current obsessions are with the grass family Poaceae and the amazing grassland biomes that they form, as well as the myrmicine genus Pheidole, and my written works (both fiction and non-fiction) are geared towards these interests.
